Working with disabled people and their organisations in developing countries

Background

JLC was founded in 1992 and registered as a charity in 1995. JLC is based in London. We do not have offices or staff in the countries that we work in because we only work through partnerships with local organisations. Our work is supported by UK donor agencies, charitable trusts and foundations, campaign groups, churches, companies and many friends and supporters.

Our Work

Disabled men, women and children are among the poorest and most vulnerable in society. We work with partner organisations to bring social and economic benefits to disabled people in developing countries, especially those who have lost limb(s) or the use of limb(s) through war, accidents or preventable diseases like polio.

Our programmes address disabled people’s basic needs, rights and livelihoods. Working together with our partners, we research and develop programmes that create opportunities for people with disabilities and their families so that they can take control over their lives and join the main stream of society as equal and valued contributors.

We currently support projects on income generating schemes for people with disabilities, their families and communities; partner capacity building; training, physical rehabilitation; the development and promotion of appropriate rehabilitation technology; disability awareness and networking our partners in different countries to share experiences and expertise.  We are working with partner organisations in India, Mozambique, Angola, Bangladesh, Ethiopia and Nepal.

Please visit our Website for more information about programmes and partnerships.

For the Baring Foundation’s International Programme Seminars we have invited Isaac Nyathi of Disability Initiatives and Services (DIS) to be our representative from the field. DIS supports disabled people’s organisations in Southern and Eastern Africa in the areas of advocacy and lobbying, conflict resolution, planning, monitoring and evaluation.  DIS has helped to deliver capacity building training and planning for JLC partners in Angola and Mozambique.
