The Tigrai Development association(TDA) was founded in 1989 in Diaspora during the Ethiopian civil war, as an apolitical,  non profit, tax exempt humanitarian organisation with chapters and support groups in Ethiopia and abroad.

In October 1992 TDA moved its headquarters to Mekelle, the capital of Tigrai, the northern most region of Ethiopia to work closely with the people of Tigrai, the end users of development programmes.

Today TDA has become an internationally recognised association with hundreds of thousands of members residing on the remotest areas of Tigrai and elsewhere on the globe.

TDA has a vision of seeing a prosperous Ethiopia free of poverty and its mission is to be a strong development arm that supports the development efforts of the people of Tigrai. The trusty areas of intervention include: education with special emphasis on primary education, basic health services with main focus on maternal and child healthcare and targeted skill training for income generation to achieve food security for people living in drought prone areas through continual raising of resources from its members, supporters and donor organisations and with active community participation..

To effectively utilise the available resources pooled from different sources, TDA has established an organisation structure and operational working manuals which makes it transparent and accountable to its supporters and the general public at large.

TDA’s reputable partners and supporters in its development endeavours are the USAID, DFIF, EU, Menchen Für Menchen, DANIDA, SIDA, CIDA, GTZ, ESRDF, REST, PACT, National Lottery of UK, Banyan Tree Foundation, Comic Relief, BAI, UNICEF, Baring Foundation etc.

TDA employs 215 persons with different capacities at its headquarters, branch office and its liaison office in Addis Ababa. It has formulated co-operative and productive working relationships with the community, government line offices, donors and supporters.

TDA has developed a three year strategic plan to guide the successful implementation of its projects and development programs in the areas of capacity building, promotion of health services and skill training for income generation.
