The Baring Foundation was set up in 1969 to give money to charities and voluntary organisations pursuing charitable purposes. In 42 years we have given £102.5 million in grants. Our budget for grant-making in 2011 is £2.2 million.

We have specific grants programmes concerned with strengthening the voluntary sector, international development and the arts. Please click on this link to find out more about these programmes.

The Joint International Development programme 2012
The Joint International Development programme 2012, in collaboration with the John Ellerman Foundation, is open. We are continuing the theme of improving the effectiveness of NGOs and CBOs in Sub-Saharan Africa to address problems arising from the long-term forced displacement of people. Click on this link to access the guidelines and information about how to apply.

Strengthening the Voluntary Sector programme
At the end of 2010 the Foundation agreed a small number of grants aimed at concluding the five-year independence programme. There will be no open grant application round in 2011 as the Foundation develops guidelines for a new STVS programme. These will be published on this web-site no earlier than April 2012. Please click on this link for details of the publications arising out of the STVS programme in recent years.

We are also working on special initiatives which include: African diaspora, interculturality and climate change.

The Baring Archive

The Baring Archive is owned by ING Bank (which acquired Baring Brothers Bank in 1995) and is one of the finest archives of a financial institution anywhere in the world. There is a website which provides an introduction to the organisation and content of the Archive and will enable casual enquirers, historians and researchers to begin to see and understand the wealth of material that is held in the Archive. Click on to this link to enter the Baring Archive website.
