The Baring Foundation was set up in 1969 to give money to charities and voluntary organisations pursuing charitable purposes. In 41 years we have given almost £100 million in grants. Our budget for grant-making in 2010 is £2.5 million.

We have specific grants programmes concerned with strengthening the voluntary sector, international development and the arts.

Strengthening the Voluntary Sector - independence programme 2010
The 2010 programme focuses on legal advice and advocacy organisations. This continues the focus established in 2008. New grants were awarded in July 2010. Please click on the following links for news about the programme and details of the publications arising out of the work.

The Joint International Development programme 2010
The application deadline for the Joint International Development programme 2010, in collaboration with the John Ellerman Foundation, has passed. New grants will be awarded in October.

The Arts programme 2010
We have introduced a new theme for this round of funding: organisational development funding for arts organisations in the UK already producing and presenting arts made by older people. New grants were awarded in June 2010.
Please go to the news page for more details.

We are also working on special initiatives which include: creating a better deal for parents with learning difficulties, interculturality and climate change.

The Baring Archive

The Baring Archive is owned by ING Bank (which acquired Baring Brothers Bank in 1995) and is one of the finest archives of a financial institution anywhere in the world. There is a website which provides an introduction to the organisation and content of the Archive and will enable casual enquirers, historians and researchers to begin to see and understand the wealth of material that is held in the Archive. Click on to this link to enter the Baring Archive website.
